FCIA Recent Developments
The FCIA's technology roadmaps define and support innovative technologies developed by its member companies to further the industry as a whole. Recent developments by FCIA include 8Gb/s Fibre Channel (8GFC) for an intra-cabinet storage device interconnect and for switched SAN fabrics, making the use of 8GFC speed possible for both drive and network interfaces while maintaining compatibility with current 2 and 4 GFC technologies. The FCIA recently announced support for a new class of hybrid disk drives that combine a Fibre Channel interface with a low-cost-per-gigabyte, high-capacity disk drive mechanism. This creates a new class of storage device with significantly less cost-per-gigabyte than mission-critical Fibre Channel drives.
