BMC SOFTWARE PATROL STORAGE MANAGEMENT SUITE OF PRODUCTS ADDS SUPPORT FOR LSI LOGIC FIBRE CHANNEL ADAPTERS

PATROL for Host Bus Adapters uses LSI44929 for SNIA HBA API certification

MILPITAS, Calif., October 28, 2002 -- LSI Logic (NYSE: LSI) announced today that BMC Software, Inc. (NYSE: BMC), a leading provider of enterprise management, now supports the LSI Logic 2 Gb/s Fibre Channel family of storage adapters (http://adapters.lsilogic.com) through its PATROL® Storage Management and PATROL for Storage Networking products. Certification was based on the Storage Network Industry Association (SNIA) HBA API standard. The PATROL Storage Management solution is BMC Software's underlying management fabric for enterprise-class data management between mainframes and distributed storage systems.

"It's only natural for us to support the LSI Logic 2 Gb/s Fibre Channel products, given their market success," said Helmuth Klemm, Vice President and General Manager, Enterprise Storage Management, BMC Software. "Through LSI Logic products and BMC Software's leading PATROL technology, IT administrators can improve the availability of their heterogeneous infrastructure by providing superior monitoring and management capabilities."

"BMC Software is a proven leader in providing enterprise storage management solutions. Having the added support specific to our Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBAs) further extends customer's options," said Bob Anderson, director for the LSI Logic Host Bus Adapter Group. "In a fast moving marketplace, customers must increase competitiveness. Having PATROL-based support for our HBAs is a means of achieving better, more reliable system integration."

The LSI Logic 2 Gb/s, dual-channel LSI44929 Fibre Channel HBA offers industry leading target mode performance achieving up to 53,000 I/Os per second with small block reads. LSI Logic storage adapters take advantage of the Fusion-MPT? (Message Passing Technology) architecture, ideal for use with data-intensive applications such as data warehousing, digital media and data mining. LSI Logic supplies a full spectrum of ICs, storage and RAID adapters and bus expanders worldwide are through distribution channel partners such as Arrow Electronics, Avnet, Bell Microproducts, Insight Electronics and Tech Data.

PATROL for host bus adapters joins a family of Knowledge Modules (KMs) offered by BMC Software. BMC Software's PATROL KMs provide a graphical view of intelligent storage and connectivity devices. These KMs show physical attributes of the storage configuration, such as spindles, cache, controllers, power, ports, and temperature. In addition, the KMs escalate these attributes and events to the central PATROL repository to minimize unscheduled downtime and to ensure that expensive storage assets are online and performing.

About the Fusion-MPT- (Message Passing Technology) Architecture Fusion-MPT architecture, using industry standard ARM processor technology, uniquely employs the same device driver that supports Ultra320 SCSI, Serial ATA and Fibre Channel, eliminating the need to develop, install and qualify separate device drivers for each physical interface. The architecture enables OEMs to invest in a single I/O architecture that allows them to choose the best physical interface for their application while retaining the flexibility to migrate to new technologies as the market warrants. LSI Logic considers its Fusion-MPT architecture to be the fastest, most efficient and versatile architecture implemented in high performance I/O controllers today. The architecture will be applied to emerging interface technologies such as Serial Attached SCSI, as products evolve. http://www.lsilogic.com/techlib/marketing_docs/storage_stand_prod/integrated_circuits/fusion.pdf
