NEOSCALE AND McDATA ENHANCE STORAGE AREA NETWORK SECURITY

NeoScale CryptoStor Family Joins McDATA SANtegrity Ecosystem

MILPITAS, Calif. (June 30, 2003) --NeoScale Systems, Inc., a leading provider of enterprise storage security solutions for the burgeoning networked storage and data storage management markets, today announced that the NeoScale CryptoStor™ family of storage security appliances have achieved OpenReadyä tested status with McDATA (Nasdaq: MCDT/MCDTA), the expert provider of multi-capable storage networking solutions. This enables the NeoScale line of products to become part of the McDATA SANtegrityä Ecosystem of partners to deliver solutions for securing storage networks. The NeoScale CryptoStor family complements McDATA SANtegrity Suite by adding strong access control and data confidentiality.

SANs are no longer closed environments. Controlling access to networked storage resources and data can be complex due to the growth of more distributed storage, external entry points, system redundancy, replication technologies, managed services, and extensive administrative rights. Furthermore, unintentional exposures, internal security breaches, storage media access, and mounting privacy legislation place storage defenses as a “must do.” This requires a balance between connectivity and protection to enable companies to prevent the loss / theft of sensitive information or disruption of their business processes. Enterprise storage security is evolving to enable organizations to apply a layered defense model within their storage infrastructure.

"Just as manageability affects an enterprise’s return-on-investment for storage, SAN security can support an organization’s operational efficiency and reduce the potential for liability," said Arun Taneja, founder and consulting analyst, the Taneja Group. "McDATA and NeoScale’s progressive efforts to advance access control and confidentiality capabilities prove that an integrated solution is the best approach – SANs must be able to enforce a security policy for protecting storage processes and data access regarding consolidation, remote backup and privacy compliance applications."

McDATA SANtegrity Security Suite is a purpose-built solution for increasing the security of storage networks. The SANtegrity Security Suite is a set of features, functions, and best practices, as well as security classes, and partnerships with leading providers of security products for McDATA’s multi-capable storage networking solutions.

"The right customer strategy for security solutions is a defense in depth architecture. The SANtegrity Security Suite enables companies to deploy larger, more secure, and centrally managed storage networks. By employing McDATA’s SANtegrity, customers can focus on extending the value of their SANs and on business critical operations such as data center mirroring, backup, and remote backup," said Mark Stratton, McDATA director of solutions and alliances. "NeoScale’s solutions complement McDATA’s SANtegrity Security Suite by enabling our customers to enforce confidentiality of data stored both inside and outside the data center."

NeoScale’s CryptoStor is designed specifically for protecting primary and secondary storage within networked and distributed storage infrastructures. CryptoStor FC operates inline within a McDATA zone to provide block-based data encryption and storage "Firewall" services protecting SAN-attached storage based on user-defined policies. CryptoStor for Tape supports McDATA switch networks to provide data storage compression, encryption and authentication services for tape and virtual tape devices. Deployed according to storage application requirements, the CryptoStor solution reduces or eliminates unauthorized access to stored data- in-management, in-flight and at-rest. Both products support similar storage security best practices as McDATA including hardened operating system, secure management connections, roles-based administration, and clustered/fail-over deployment.

"Companies are seeking ways to leverage their storage investments which optimize capacity, availability and management," said Jim Dawson, vice president of business development of NeoScale. "The combination of McDATA’s enterprise-class switch and SAN management solutions with NeoScale’s enterprise-class storage security appliances enables customers to reliably meet evolving data protection challenges. We are very pleased to achieve McDATA SANtegrity tested status and to deliver secured solutions to our customers."

McDATA and NeoScale have jointly tested interoperability of CryptoStor with specific McDATA switch products and network configurations. Deployment guidelines for supported solutions are available from both McDATA Corp. and NeoScale Systems, Inc. The companies anticipate additional collaborative security efforts including SANavigator integration, support of the Fibre Channel standard for authentication (FC-SP), and solution notes pertaining to secure storage management applications for consolidation, managed services, disaster recovery, and tape vaulting.
